The firm is engaged in the development and supply of process technologies, automation and related services that are aimed at specific industries, such as pulp, paper and energy. The companies and experience that Valmet has been built on go back more than 200 years, but the firm was established in its present form in 2013. It has over 120 service centres in more than 30 countries, serving a worldwide customer base.

Valmet provides products, services and technologies for a wide range of industries, including alternative fuels, the food industry, the pharmaceutical industry, metals and minerals and natural gas infrastructure. The firm has a strong commitment to sustainability and has received an A rating in CDP's climate change programme ranking.

Valmet’s stock is listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange where it trades under the ticker VALMT.HE. The company’s stock has been listed on this exchange since January 2014. On 1 March 2022, Valmet announced the acquisition of North American-based Coldwater Seals, Inc., a provider of consumables and services to the pulp and paper industry.
