Vulcan Energy Resources Ltd is an Australian energy metals exploration company, primarily mining lithium for the production of electric vehicle batteries. The company is involved in the development of a combined geothermal and lithium extraction project, located in the Rhine Valley of Germany. The firm has its headquarters in Perth, Western Australia, and has been in operation since 2018.
Vulcan Energy has developed a zero-carbon lithium extraction process, which uses renewable geothermal energy and additionally creates a renewable energy by-product. Traditional lithium mining would emit approximately 1.05 billion tonnes of CO2 if it were to extract the quantity of lithium needed to convert 100% of the world’s passenger vehicles to electricity. However, Vulcan Energy is aiming to reduce the environmental impact of producing electric vehicles by lowering the carbon production footprint of lithium-ion batteries to zero. This is achieved by effectively producing a lithium hydroxide monohydrate chemical product with zero carbon footprint.
Prior to September 2019, the company was known as Koppar Resources Limited, but changed its name to Vulcan Energy Resources. The firm is listed on the ASX where it trades under the stock ticker VUL.
