Lyft, Inc. initially started out as a company providing ride-sharing services that connect drivers to riders but has expanded into providing car rental programs for short- and long-distance trips, payment processing, and food delivery. The Lyft app was launched in 2012 as an offshoot of Zimride, a company that provides long-distance intercity carpooling services. Zimride’s carpooling services was then sold to Enterprise Holdings in July 2013 and was officially renamed as Lyft in May 2013 to focus on intra-city rides. Lyft’s main office is based in San Francisco, California. In addition, it operates in 644 cities around the United States and 12 cities in Canada.

Lyft’s subsidiaries include Bikeshare Holdings LLC, Halo Cars, Inc. Motivate International, Flexdrive, Blue Vision Las, Citibike, and more. The company was awarded Best CEO for two consecutive years (2018 and 2019) and Best Company Work-Life Balance in 2019. The awards were based on 3,409 ratings and 190 participants.

In 2021, the company signed an agreement with Woven Planet Holdings, Inc., a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, for the latter to acquire its self-driving vehicle division. Lyft trades on the NASDAQ GS under the ticker LYFT.
