Another of the many Anglo-Dutch companies, Unilever DR is a massive consumer goods company, based in London and Rotterdam. Unilever was founded in 1929 by 1st Viscount William Lever and several others. It owns many popular brands, such as Hellman’s, Lipton, Knorr, Ben & Jerry’s and Dollar Shave Club. Unilever is a truly global operation, with research and development facilities in the United States, India, China, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Its main rival is Procter & Gamble.
Unilever DR is a dual-listed company, with shares available on both the New York Stock Exchange and Amsterdam Stock Exchange. It is also part of the FTSE 100. Unilever, stock symbol UNA.NV, went public in 1999.
Unilever DR has repeatedly acquired other companies to expand its operations and increase competitiveness. Some notable acquisitions include Quala, Sundial, Hourglass and Pukka Herbs. Surprisingly, the much smaller Kraft Heinz attempted to purchase Unilever for $143 billion in 2017. The bid was declined. Unilever is not against off-loading assets, should the need arise. The company sold its margarine and spreads division to KKR in 2017 for $8.04 billion.
