It focuses primarily on small and medium-sized clients all over the world, including Belgium, Central Europe, Ireland and South-East Asia. In addition to insurance, KBC is also heavily involved in retail banking, asset management, and leasing services. The company was founded in 1935 and was known as Kredietbank, before changing its name to KBC. It is considered one of the largest financial institutions in Europe in terms of market capitalisation.
KBC went public in 1999, with a ticker symbol that is identical to its name. KBC is dual-listed on the Euronext and LuxSE, the Luxembourg stock exchange. LuxSE was founded in 1928 and has enjoyed a working relationship with the Euronext over the last several years.
KBC was created when Algemeene Bankvereeniging, Volksbank van Leuven, and Bank voor Handel en Nijverheid merged in 1935, but the bank can trace its roots back to 1889. KBC was the only Flemish financial institution to survive the Great Depression in the 1930s.
