Lagardère (MMB.PA) is a French multinational media conglomerate founded in 1992. Headquartered in Paris and listed on the Euronext Paris stock exchange, Lagardere’s operations span four major units. The first is Lagardère Publishing, a book and electronic publishing business which owns Hachette Livre. The Lagardère Travel Retail business manages retail units in travel hubs such as airports and railway stations.
Lagardère Active is a media publisher with interests spanning newspapers and magazines as well as digital-only media, radio and television broadcasting and production and advertising sales. Finally, Lagardère Sports and Entertainment’s focus is sports and talent management, event management, sports venues management and the marketing of sports broadcasting rights.
While the modern Lagardère Group was incorporated in 1992, the company can indirectly trace its history as far back as 1826 and the acquisition of the Parisian bookstore,Brédif by Louis Hachette. The group has a particularly diverse history with today’s company being the end result of a series of mergers and acquisitions of companies, including Matra, originally an aerospace firm. It wasn’t until 2003 that an interest in French carmaker, Renault was sold off.
