Founded in 1909, the company was initially known as Virginia Holdco before it changed its name to Vulcan Materials Company after a merger with Vulcan Detinning Company in 1956 allowed it to gain access to capital markets. Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, the organisation operates primarily in the United States, with an international interest through its marine terminals and quarries located in British Columbia and the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico.
The company operates through four segments. The Aggregates division supplies crushed stones, sand, gravel, and other aggregates and associated products and services towards the construction and maintenance of public roads and public works, as well as housing, commercial, industrial, and other construction projects. The Asphalt Mix segment provides asphalt and offers asphalt construction paving activities in Alabama, Tennessee, and Texas. Vulcan Material’s Concrete segment supplies ready-mixed concrete in the states of Maryland, Texas, Virginia, and Washington D.C. The Calcium division engages in the mining and production of calcium products for animal feed, plastics, and water treatment works.
Vulcan Materials is the largest producer of construction aggregates in the United States. The company trades on the NYSE under the VMC ticker.
