AutoNation operates its business through three segments: Domestic, Import, and Premium Luxury. AutoNation's Domestic segment includes retail automotive franchises that sell new vehicles from General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis. The company's Import segment includes retail automotive franchises that sell new vehicles manufactured by Nissan, Toyota, Subaru, and Honda, while the Premium Luxury segment includes retail automotive franchises selling new BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, Jaguar, Audi, and Land Rover vehicles. Used vehicles, parts, and automotive repair and maintenance services are also available through the franchises in each segment.

The company's franchises also offer automotive finance and insurance products, in addition to arranging financing through third-party sources for vehicle purchases. As of 30 September 2021, AutoNation owns and operates over 300 locations across 18 states, making it America's largest automotive retailer.
