The company operates in the following areas: utilities and energy, insurance and reinsurance, manufacturing, freight rail transportation, and retail. Incorporated in 1998, Berkshire Hathaway has its headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska.

Berkshire Hathaway operates through six segments: Insurance, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, LLC, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, Manufacturing, McLane Company, and Service and Retailing. Through its insurance segment, the company operates Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance Group, Berkshire Hathaway Primary Group, and GEICO. Burlington Northern Santa Fe, LLC operates a railroad system, while Berkshire Hathaway Energy is a regulated electric and gas utility. The company produces a wide range of products through its Manufacturing sector, including building, consumer, and industrial goods. McLane Company is a wholesale distributor of groceries and non-food items. Berkshire Hathaway's Service and Retailing segment includes providers of a diverse selection of services, such as aviation pilot training, aircraft ownership programs, automobile dealerships, furniture leasing, and electronic components distribution.

Berkshire Hathaway stock is listed on the NYSE under the ticker BRK.B.
