The open-source Celo platform is supported by the non-profit Celo foundation, founded by Marek Olszewski, Rene Reinsberg and Sep Kamvar, and based in San Francisco. The platform aims to make financial tools completely borderless and easily accessible for anyone with a smart phone. Celo was founded in 2017 and supports the development of smart contracts and decentralized applications.

Celo is a blockchain protocol that uses phone numbers as public keys. The platform features two primary cryptoassets. Celo (CELO) is the platform’s native asset, allowing payment for on-chain transactions and the right to vote on governance decisions. Celo Dollars function as a stable coin pegged to the US Dollar. Stable coins are backed by a decentralised reserve to provide more stability and transparency.
