SM Energy Company is an independent energy corporation, dealing in oil and gas exploration as well as the production of gas, gas liquids, and crude oil in the US. Founded in 1908, the company was originally called the St Mary Parish Land Company, which owned 17,800 acres of land near the Gulf of Mexico. In 2010, St Mary’s Energy changed its name to SM Energy Company. Its headquarters are located in Denver, Colorado, and there are two regional offices in Texas, in the cities of Midland and Houston. As of December 2021, the company employs over 500 people.
SM Energy has operations in the Midland Basin and in south Texas, where it owns 155,000 acres. The company also owns 81,000 acres of land in the Permian Basin in west Texas. In the Midland Basin, SM Energy operates three rigs with two completion crews, while in south Texas, one rig runs with one completion crew.
