The company is one of the largest apartment unit owners in America while owning units of houses in just five areas in the country: New England, the New York/New Jersey, the Mid-Atlantic, the Pacific Northwest, and Northern & Southern California. Originally founded in 1978, it merged with Bay Apartment Communities Inc in 1998. As a result of the merger, the newly formed AvalonBay Communities owns over 40,000 apartments across the US. The company has its headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.

AvalonBay Communities Inc. owns or has a stake in the ownership of 293 apartment in the areas in which it operates. These 293 apartments contain 87,416 homes in 13 states and the District of Columbia.

As of December 2021, the company has a workforce of more than 3,000 employees. All operations of the company come under three operational segments: Development or Redevelopment Communities, Established Communities, and Other Stabilized Communities.
