Founded in the Cayman Islands, and with its headquarters in Shanghai, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) was started in 2000 by Richard Chang Ru-gin. SMIC is the largest semiconductor foundry in China, partnering with well-known companies like Qualcomm and Texas Instruments. SMIC has a notable presence in many regions outside of China, including Europe, Japan, Taiwan and the United States. SMIC stock, 0981.HK, is available for trade on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong. 0981.HK stock was also available on the New York Stock Exchange in the past, until the company delisted on May 25, 2019. SMIC went public in 2004, raising $1.8 billion and valued at HK$2.69 per share. SMIC has remained highly active throughout the years, both in terms of acquisitions and partnerships. JCET, a subsidiary of SMIC, entered into an investment agreement with China IC Fund in 2014. In 2015, Qualcomm and Huawei joined SMIC to create SMIC Advanced Technology Research & Development. China IC Capital, an investment fund owned by SMIC, Ningbo Senson and Beijing Integrated Circuit Design formed Ningbo Semiconductor International Corporation in 2016.
