Dropbox Inc is a cloud-based file hosting service with more than 700 million users worldwide in approximately 180 countries, as of December 2020. Founded in 2007 by two MIT students, Dropbox is a file-sharing and content collaboration platform that enables its users to securely upload files to cloud storage. The company has its headquarters in San Francisco, California. Originally known as Evenflow Inc, the company changed its name to Dropbox Inc in October 2009.
The platform is offered via a freemium model, in which users can sign up for a free account with a limited storage size. Basic users are provided with two gigabytes of space, while Plus users are offered two terabytes as well as additional features. In 2015, the company launched Dropbox Paper, a collaborative document editor aimed at businesses. It allows users to co-author content, assign tasks with due dates, comment on files, and tag others, among other features.
Dropbox is publicly listed on the NASDAQ under the ticker DBX. In March 2021, the company announced that it had agreed to acquire DocSend, a secure document exchange and analytics platform.
