Swire, also known as the Swire Group or Swire Pacific, is a large business conglomerate that was founded in 1816. The company is based in Hong Kong and London and is entirely owned by John Swire and Sons Limited. Swire holdings include aviation, food chains, marine and industrial services. It acquired Cathay Pacific, a leading Chinese airline in 1948. The company owns numerous assets in other locations, such as Australia, East Africa, Sri Lanka and the United States. Arguably, the crown jewel in the Swire portfolio is its Coca-Cola bottling business. The company is the bottler for Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan and several regions in the United States.
After a failed IPO in 2010, Swire was finally able to go public, raising over $500 million in a single round. Swire is traded as 0019.HK on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong, with both ‘A’ and ‘B’ shares available. Usually, the difference between shares with different classifications is the amount of voting power with which they provide the owner, with ‘A’ shares offering more voting power than ‘B’ shares.
Swire Pacific has always been a family business. Since its inception, the company has never had a chairperson who was not a member of the Swire family.
