Italgas, IG.MI on the FTSE MIB, is one of Italy’s older companies, founded way back in 1837. Despite its Turin roots, the company now calls the city of Milan home. Italgas provides gas distribution in several countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, Spain and Italy. The company has experimented with additional services, including urbane waste management and water purification services, but later abandoned them. Despite the desire to focus on its primary business, Italgas purchased Seaside, with the goal of providing more energy efficient and environmentally friendly services.
Italgas was delisted in 2003, after a successful public takeover bid by Italian firm Erin. Erin sold Italgas in 2009, allowing the company to go public once again on the Milan Stock Exchange in 2016.
Italgas provides gas to over 1,500 municipalities in Italy, equal to roughly 30% of the country. The Italgas network is over 66,000 km long, with between 7 and 8 million delivery points. It may be hard to believe, but the company has been supplying Italy with gas for almost 200years.
