U.S. equities slipped today in the wake of weaker-than-expected labor market data. Weekly jobless claims rose sharply in the latest week to 388,000, compared with analysts’ estimates for a rise to 365,000. While U.S. company earnings have been the primary driver over the past two weeks, market participants continue to closely watch Europe for how it may deal with debt problems in Spain and Greece.
European equities rose today in a late-session rally, climbing for a fourth day as investors expect that Spain will ask for financial aid soon and that tensions surrounding the euro zone crisis will continue to decrease. Furthermore Italy sold a whopping 18 billion Euros in its “biggest result ever for a single bond sale” according to a Treasury spokesman, while Spain paid the least since February to borrow over 10 years.
The DJ30 closed at 13,548.94, declining 8.06 points (-0.06%), SPX500 closed at 1,457.34 declining 3.57 points (-0.24%) and the NASDAQ100 closed at 2,744.17, declining 31.45 points (-1.13%) in today’s trading.
