Who will pay the most for Christmas Dinner? Spain retains its title as families face soaring festive food bills, while Germany sees the steepest increase

  • Spanish families now face the most expensive Christmas dinner, with a typical meal costing €81.95 for a family of four.
  • German and French households experience major price rebounds after last year’s reductions.
  • Australia, Czech Republic and Poland see noticeable price relief.

London, December 11, 2025 – Families in Spain are once again facing the most expensive Christmas dinner this year, according to a study of twelve countries by trading and investing platform eToro.

eToro looked at local supermarket prices of traditional Christmas cuisine and found that a typical Spanish Christmas meal of turkey and the trimmings will cost €81.95 for a family of four, up 9% since last year. Meanwhile, the traditional Romanian Christmas feast of sarmale and accompaniments would cost a family of four €17.65.

This year’s findings reveal a major reshuffling of the rankings. After sharp declines in 2024, French households are now expected to see a significant price rebound, with the cost of a traditional stuffed turkey dinner rising to €73.68, up 26% compared to last year. German households experience the steepest increase, with the price of goose and the trimmings rising 28% year-on-year to €70.75, pushing Germany into the top three most expensive countries for Christmas dinner.

By contrast, Poland sees one of the largest reductions, with the cost of a traditional Christmas sauerkraut and mushroom pierogi, falling 8% to €35.18. In Australia, the traditional Christmas barbecue is also cheaper, down 6% since 2024 to €43.14. UK families on the other hand, are seeing further price increases even after 2024’s major spike, with the cost of a turkey and the trimmings edging up by 5% to €44.12, leaving prices considerably higher than the €24.80 price point two years ago.

Food inflation remains a key factor behind shifting Christmas dinner costs, with global supply chains still adjusting to weather-related crop losses, higher feed prices and continued volatility in energy and transport costs. While some markets have seen easing pressures this year, others are facing renewed increases as production challenges and regional disruptions continue to feed through to supermarket shelves.

Commenting on the data, eToro Analyst Sam North said: “This year, families across the world are again experiencing very different inflation stories as they prepare for Christmas. Some countries, like Germany, France and Spain, are seeing dramatic increases, while others such as Australia and Poland are benefiting from meaningful price reductions.

“The UK shows even further price increases, on top of already souring price increases from 2023 to 2024. These findings underline how localised food inflation remains, with even neighbouring countries seeing stark differences in supermarket prices this Christmas.”
