Premier League football bosses will soon be paying for the best players in bitcoins, it was claimed on Monday night, after seven top-flight clubs launched cryptocurrency trials. Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City, Newcastle United, Southampton, Cardiff City, Brighton and Crystal Palace have agreed to set up digital wallets with an online trading platform which says it is in "no doubt" the currency will eventually replace sterling in the multi-billion pound transfer industry.

The price of cryptocurrency Bitcoin fell to below $6,000 (£4,700) on Tuesday as the cost of other cryptocurrencies declined by billions of dollars amid a new sell off. Bitcoin fell from around $17,000 at the start of the year and lost 6pc of its value over 24 hours. Its current price is close to its lowest point of the year, which it hit on June 18th at $5,785 (£4,524).

Bitcoin shook off a bearish two months after rising above $8,000 Tuesday but based on past behavior, another pullback could be coming, according to technical analysts that cover cryptocurrency. “Given that it has trended down so sharply since May, I wouldn’t want to get too greedy,” said Newton Advisor founder and analyst Mark Newton. “Looking at cycles near term, this doesn't mean it will go back to its highs right away."

Bitcoin prices have climbed sharply over the last month, increasing by more than one-third after hitting a 2018 low in June. The digital currency's price reached as much as $7,770.58 today, according to the CoinDesk Bitcoin Price Index (BPI). At this point, the world's largest cryptocurrency by market value was up more than 5% since the start of the day and 34.3% from its recent low on June 24, additional BPI figures show.
